Nadia Comaneci was born on December 12, 1961 within Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onesti), Romania. Nadia is the Romanian Olympic gymnast, and holds the record for being recognized with 10/10 scores during an Olympic performance. Bela Karalyi discovered Comaneci at age six. Later, she would be Romania's gymnastics coach. The first time she competed at the national junior championships in 1969 placing 13th and she won the competition in 1970. In her 1972 first international event that was an preolympics junior event for countries in the Communist bloc, she won 3 gold medals. In 1973 and 1975, she was crowned all-around Junior Champion. She took home four gold medals and one silver medals at her senior debut international competition that took place in 1975. It was the first time she had competed as an older senior.
